Stewart and Colbert are doing bargaining unit work while there is a strike going on. The work they are doing enables their corporate masters to make money in an effort to break the strike. They are scabs and that much less cool for being so.
Of course, it is a sign of labor's weakness that "that much less cool" isn't very much. But still.

yep, this needed to be said.
didn't catch colbert last night, but it does seem like he's eliminated some segments that were obviously done by his writers (like "the word"). and one night this week he was reading from a print copy of the NYT rather than using clips. so his show is mostly colbert being colbert and not so much scripted.
that makes him a little bit better than stewart, who was a surly asshole his first night back (kudos for focusing on the strike, but big points off for focusing way too much on how unfair it was to him personally). and by night two the show was on as usual.
so you are absolutely right. that really sucks.
I watched the first 10 minutes of Stewart, hoping he'd be more "I really don't want to be here, but these madre humpers made me, but no. I saw he was trying to do the Daily Show reverse-what it-true schtick, but it didn't work.
I heard Colbert's interview with Huckabee, which was funny, but that's the problem. Most people are like Huckabee and they think all the shows are cool to be on the air.
We had an earnest discussion about this 'round the old union office and concluded that none of us are permitted to watch either show anymore.
i'm not surprised to see colbert scabbing. in 2003, i was part of a group of projectionists that organized a theater just outside of boston, ma. we were about 2 months into a strike for recognition that had by now turned into a lockout and colbert had the nerve to cross our picket to perform at the theater. the scumbag even said, "don't worry, i won't project anything" as he walked by a 100+ picket line. even seemingly a-political acts, such a jonathan richman, cancelled and moved to another venue, but colbert had no second thoughts about crossing the line.
To add to the scabbiness of Stewart, I'm put off by his lack of intelligence in understanding the situation in Venezuela. He has so dismissively treated Chavez as a dictator; and since far too many college students think of the world according to Stewart, he's having a negative influence on politics generally.
What can be done to address Colbert and Stewart's scab activity?
