Ooh La La, Royal Crown Cola

Did anyone else have homemade soda pop when they were a kid? We bought the syrup in pumps and you had to mix it with soda water (I think. It might have been tap water and some carbon dioxide injection). It was not what you would call good. I can't remember if we bought this because we were poor, or because high-fructose corn syrup was just being introduced and Coke Shasta was still relatively expensive.

Anyone else share this childhood memory?

I seem to recall there being an effort to franchise some kind of home made soda pop system in the mid to late 70s. We never bought one, but I came across some of the products from time to time. Yucky. The same friend that had the home made soda pop had a family recipe for no-sauce spaghetti.

I've never tried homemade soda, but those things are coming back. I know someone who has one and just uses it to make sparkling water. I want to try banana flavored soda because I love banana flavored candy, but I never see banana soda anywhere.

I did not have this childhood experience. But I am fascinated by how many things that folks used to do out of economic necessity are now coming back, but as (often "trendy") lifestyle choices. It's funny how making (or, in the case of gardening, growing) your own...whatever now carries a certain amount of status/cultural capital. It used to be the case that making one's own clothes was a sign of poverty; now homemade/handmade is chic (and often pricey). My grandmother grew vegetables in her backyard for subsistence; (a lot of) home gardening today is about growing exotic heirloom varieties. Same, I suppose, with making your own soda/beer/wine--which is now more craft than necessity.

That said, if I could add bubbles to every beverage, I would totally do it. Ginger, when I start making my own line of fine, handcrafted artisanal sparkling sodas, (heirloom organic) banana will be one of my first creations.

Don't get me started on the homemade clothes.

Is that any different than an Italian soda? Soda water + flavored sugary syrup? Maybe your family was just ahead of the times....

Soda? Shoot, I can probably count on one hand how many times I had soda as a kid. And when I did, it was the store brand (but my mom always called it Coke).
