Daily Emerald on Strike

Those that know me well, know that I am usually the first person to mock these kinds of things. (It has to do with my fear of standing out in public, so I make fun of others who do it. It's really what makes me so lovable). But I am actually thinking the kids at the Emerald on are on the right track here.

I encourage you to read what they have written.

This feels right. They lay out a persuasive case. There is nothing (pardon) hysterical about what they write. Nothing that seems like a bunch of whiny kids making crazy demands. They haven't barricaded a cafeteria. They are not demanding anything over the top or tangential (at best) to their cause. Hopefully, their protest will not end up a predictably miserable failure.

So until I know otherwise, go Daily Emerald staff! I hope I don't see a paper in the box tomorrow.

Whoa, that is some crazy shit. I'll contact some folks I know at the SOJC to see what, if any, behind-the-scenes info they have. Based on the ODE's side of the story, this sounds outrageous. Who gets to come in as a consultant, create a job, then demand said job (with an 80K salary! Frak, who knew student journalism could be so lucrative?!) with no negotiation or even so much as an interview?? That just sounds crazy unethical. WTF?

Also, thanks for the reminder of the NYU, um, action. I had forgotten half of their demands. That was good for a laugh.

Spitefully (and immaturely) I now do not care what happens to the staff at the Emerald.

They wrote an Op-Ed (which they are totally entitled to)a while ago about how everyone kinda needs to get over the whole "furlough" days thing and go with it. Including Toolongoski's idea for unionized workers to take 26 over the next biennium.

Of course I hope they get that whole mess worked out (and was that Steve Smith dude's resignation via the comments fur real?!?) and that the higher ups stop being a bunch of unethical assholes, but man...their editorial board doesn't know shit. Makes me cranky.

Man, I hear what you're saying, Stevie. As a former student journalist, I read their op-eds and regularly cringe. I always think, "I know I was stupid, uninformed, and probably undeserving of a public forum when I was 20, but damn, I hope that wasn't that stupid and uninformed!"

Ash, that's funny. Having never met you but seeing how well spoken you are in the blogosphere, I have a very hard time believing you were ever that uninformed :-). But I should also cut them slack...I forget they are 20. I guess I should be happy they are semi articulate?

Of course, this was a necessary move by the staff. I'm surprised that, with a journalism program that has a reputation for being one of the best in the country, this board of directors made such a move. Says something about the university, I think.
